About the Award
The Outward Bound Trust
The Outward Bound Trust is an educational charity whose aim is to help young people realise their
potential through reflecting on, and learning from, adventurous experiences in the wild. By creating a
supportive and challenging environment in which young people can learn more about themselves and
can see clearly, perhaps for the first time, what they might truly be capable of achieving in life.
The Outward Bound Trust has two centres in Scotland, the Loch Eil centre, based near Fort William
and Metro, an urban peripatetic team based in the central belt.
The Outward Bound Trust Loch Eil centre is set on the shore of Loch Eil with views towards Ben
Nevis and close to the magnificent natural environments of Glencoe, the hills of Ardgour and Loch
Linnhe to name just a few. With all this on the doorstep it is the perfect location to provide genuine
adventures in the wild. The centre offers a range of courses that are all designed to support the
Curriculum for Excellence and provide real learning experiences for pupils aged between upper
primary to the end of secondary (and in some cases beyond). All groups will have the same instructor
working with them throughout their course, all courses include evening sessions and the majority of
courses include an overnight expedition. With 120 beds the centre caters for groups of all sizes.
The Outward Bound Trust – Metro uses the same methods of learning and discovery through
adventures in the natural environment but achieves this on a non-residential basis which for some
young people is more appropriate. Working with a wide range of groups from schools and youth
organisations across central Scotland the Metro team ensures that all young people have more
choices in life and helps to bring learning alive for young people who benefit from additional
support. Again core to all Metro courses is that the same instructor works with a group throughout.
